But with this DIY pizza lunchables recipe, you are in control of the nutrition, the pizza toppings, and even the portion sizes. Of course, you can make your own lunchables in any compartmentalized container that you like, or package each component into smaller, separate containers.

Choose your DIY pizza lunchables crusts, sauce, cheese, and toppings, then package into your container(s) of choice. I recommend packing a small spoon or spreader as well to spread on your pizza sauce. To stick with the classic lunchables style, there’s no need to cook anything ahead of time. At lunchtime, simply spread the sauce onto the crusts, top with cheese and toppings, and enjoy!

What kind of bread is used in pizza lunchables?
Store-bought pizza lunchables include 3 mini circular “whole grain crusts.” So, for my homemade pizza lunchables, I cut whole wheat pita into small circles using a biscuit/cookie cutter! (If you’re worried about leftover pita, I recommend enjoying it as a snack while you prep.) Or, simply cut your large pita into 4 wedges instead of circles so there’s no excess. You’re welcome to use regular pita or gluten free instead of whole wheat, or any number of other breads as your pizza crusts.

As mentioned, you don’t have to cook your homemade pizza lunchables at all! That’s sort of the beauty and convenience of lunchables to me. But, for those who prefer a warm pizza with melted cheese, you’ve got a few cooking options.
Are you supposed to microwave pizza lunchables?
If you’d like, but you don’t have to! The classic pizza lunchables—with all of the raw ingredients ready to assemble at lunchtime—can be enjoyed cold or warm. To enjoy warm, simply assemble your mini pizzas, add them to a microwave-safe plate, and then microwave = on high power for about 30 seconds.
Can you cook your homemade pizza lunchables in the oven?
Yes, absolutely! If you’re serving up these DIY pizza lunchables at home instead of at school, you can heat them in the oven or toaster oven at 350°F (180°C) until the cheese melts—about 5 minutes. (Monitor your mini pizzas to make sure they don’t burn!)
Alternatively, you’ve got the option to assemble and bake an entire pita pizza ahead of time, then slice it into wedges and pack into your lunchbox. Just bake at 350°F (180°C) for 10 minutes, allow to cool, then pack for lunch and enjoy the next day as cold pizza or reheat it! You can also use this bake-ahead option if you’re making an English muffin pizza, bagel pizza, sandwich-thin pizza, etc.

Just like with the classic pre-made lunchables, I recommend packing some snacks, sweets, and even a drink to go with your homemade lunchables! The great thing about making your own version is that you get to choose the accompaniments and customize the lunch to your preferences.
