But with this DIY pizza lunchables recipe, you are in control of the nutrition, the pizza toppings, and even the portion sizes. You choose which bread to use for the crust—whether it’s pita bread or sandwich thins, a whole wheat or white or gluten-free bread. You choose which cheese(s) you want. And you decide which snacks and sweet treats to pack alongside the pizza!

Plus, homemade pizza lunchables still bring the most important ingredient to lunchtime: the FUN of putting your food together yourself and eating it with your hands. I’ll show you how to prep a classic lunchables box with crusts, sauce, and toppings that you assemble at the time of eating. And, I’ll show you a make-ahead option for those who want to bake their pita pizza ahead of time, and then enjoy it cold or reheat it at lunchtime!

Classic lunchables come in those perfectly sized containers with compartments for each component of the lunch. So, I figured what better way to pack my homemade pizza lunchables than in a bento box?! Of course, you can make your own lunchables in any compartmentalized container that you like, or package each component into smaller, separate containers.

How do you make your own pizza lunchables?

Choose your DIY pizza lunchables crusts, sauce, cheese, and toppings, then package into your container(s) of choice. I recommend packing a small spoon or spreader as well to spread on your pizza sauce. To stick with the classic lunchables style, there’s no need to cook anything ahead of time. At lunchtime, simply spread the sauce onto the crusts, top with cheese and toppings, and enjoy!

Really, the easiest way to think about this is to consider: what would you use to make a homemade pita pizza or English muffin pizza? Assemble those raw ingredients into your packed lunch!

What kind of bread is used in pizza lunchables?

Store-bought pizza lunchables include 3 mini circular “whole grain crusts.” So, for my homemade pizza lunchables, I cut whole wheat pita into small circles using a biscuit/cookie cutter! (If you’re worried about leftover pita, I recommend enjoying it as a snack while you prep.) Or, simply cut your large pita into 4 wedges instead of circles so there’s no excess. You’re welcome to use regular pita or gluten free instead of whole wheat, or any number of other breads as your pizza crusts.

Cooking Options for Homemade Pizza Lunchables

As mentioned, you don’t have to cook your homemade pizza lunchables at all! That’s sort of the beauty and convenience of lunchables to me. But, for those who prefer a warm pizza with melted cheese, you’ve got a few cooking options.

Are you supposed to microwave pizza lunchables?

If you’d like, but you don’t have to! The classic pizza lunchables—with all of the raw ingredients ready to assemble at lunchtime—can be enjoyed cold or warm. To enjoy warm, simply assemble your mini pizzas, add them to a microwave-safe plate, and then microwave = on high power for about 30 seconds.

Can you cook your homemade pizza lunchables in the oven?

Yes, absolutely! If you’re serving up these DIY pizza lunchables at home instead of at school, you can heat them in the oven or toaster oven at 350°F (180°C) until the cheese melts—about 5 minutes. (Monitor your mini pizzas to make sure they don’t burn!)

Alternatively, you’ve got the option to assemble and bake an entire pita pizza ahead of time, then slice it into wedges and pack into your lunchbox. Just bake at 350°F (180°C) for 10 minutes, allow to cool, then pack for lunch and enjoy the next day as cold pizza or reheat it! You can also use this bake-ahead option if you’re making an English muffin pizza, bagel pizza, sandwich-thin pizza, etc.

What Else to Pack with DIY Pizza Lunchables

Just like with the classic pre-made lunchables, I recommend packing some snacks, sweets, and even a drink to go with your homemade lunchables! The great thing about making your own version is that you get to choose the accompaniments and customize the lunch to your preferences. These homemade pizza lunchables are a simple & fun on-the-go option for kids—or adults! How to make your own lunchables with pita, sauce & cheese.

DIY Pizza Lunchables 

  • 3-4 mini whole wheat pita circles, or 4 pita wedges (I use a cookie or biscuit cutter)
  • ¼ –⅓ cup pizza sauce
  • –½ cup mozzarella shreds
  • 2-3 Tbsp mini pepperoni
  • 2-3 Tbsp chopped bell peppers
  • any pizza toppings of choice!

Optional Additional Sides

  • mixed fruit, I used clementines & blueberries
  • eggless brownies, or sweet treat of choice!


  • Cut pita* into desired shapes for lunchables—either circles or wedges. Store crusts one compartment of bento box, or in a separate sealed container or bag. (Enjoy any leftover pita as a snack while you prep!)
  • Package pizza sauce into a small dip or dressing container with a lid.
  • Store cheese in one compartment or container, and store pepperoni and chopped bell pepper in a separate compartment or container. (Feel free to use whichever pizza toppings you prefer!)
  • Pair DIY pizza lunchables components with desired sides. I went with mixed fruit and some brownies, but you can pack anything else that you like! 
  • Store lunch in the fridge, then take on-the-go and enjoy!
  • Yields 1 homemade pizza lunchables box. 


*Note on Pita Bread: Don’t worry about finding small or mini pitas—just buy your favorite large pitas and cut them to size! I like to use a cookie or biscuit cutter to cut mine into the classic lunchables circles, but you can also simply cut the pita into 4 wedges. Enjoy any excess pita as a snack while you prep!
