Hi, I’m Alyssia!
Welcome to Mind Over Munch—your all-encompassing resource to healing relationships with food. Being healthy is hard! But this community, which is built around evidence-based mindfulness and nutrition, always prioritizes supporting you in a compassionate and meaningful way.
“I felt owned by food and exercise.”
When I started Mind Over Munch nearly 7 years ago, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I always wanted to help people on their journey to being healthy, but the truth is that I hadn’t addressed my own negative relationships with food and health. I couldn’t lose weight, and more importantly, I felt owned by food and exercise.
Eventually, I found mindfulness, and my experience of life, particularly my relationships with food and health, started to shift. How did this happen? I didn’t know. So I went to grad school to get my M.A. in Mindfulness Studies to figure it all out.
“I eventually realized that the way to health was almost nothing at all what I’d been taught…”
With many twists and turns, I eventually realized that the way to health was almost nothing at all what I’d been taught it “should be” in my traditional nutrition or physical fitness education years prior.
Why? The Western model of health mostly rejects the idea that the mind and body are connected.
But this is actually a fact—and I realized that, in denying this, I was avoiding seeing clearly. We know this to be true thanks to experiences like stress, which is certainly mental and emotional, but also very much physiological. Our mental and emotional experience of stress are what secretes the hormones that may raise our blood pressure, for instance.
“I started to see what it actually meant to ‘listen to my body.'”
Once I was opened up to the idea that the mind and body might be connected, I discovered a whole world of research that made so much sense with my experience of health.
How could I have so much nutrition knowledge but not be able to lose weight? As I began acknowledging and exploring the emotional part of me that had been neglected, I realized my “problems” with emotional eating were rooted in a lack of healthy coping mechanisms. This caused a great deal of stress in my body, which made it almost impossible to lose weight or achieve physical health. As I started to let my intellect settle down and get to know myself—I started to see what it actually meant to “listen to my body.” I’d heard the phrase, but realized I didn’t actually know how to do it.
“I can’t do the work for you, but I can help teach you what I’ve learned.”
Of course, hindsight is 20/20. I don’t want anyone else to spend years trying to figure this out. I can’t do the work for you, but I can help teach you what I’ve learned.
On my YouTube channel, I share free videos every week to do just that through recipes, educational content, mindfulness tools and guidance, and more. If you join my email community, you’ll get weekly emails about this mind/body connection; sometimes more focused on the mind, and sometimes more body. In my Brain Food Club community, you’ll get access to workshops where I share the specific tools more deeply, and of course, the opportunity to engage with other like-minded people on this healing journey. Through 1-on-1 coaching, you can work with me individually to get to know yourself and get out of your own way.
“My ultimate goal is to help others NOT feel so stressed out about food and health.”
On this website, you’ll mostly find recipes. I’ve followed just about every diet, and where I’ve settled is a balanced “middle way”—so while you’ll find some recipes dedicated to being higher fat, or paleo, you’ll also find “regular” recipes that are simply lightened up to account for nutrition in an easy and stress-free way.
My ultimate goal is to help others NOT feel so stressed out about food and health. What are we really after when we seek a number on the scale, anyway? Peace, of course. We want to feel okay in our bodies, just as we are. This is accessible to us in any moment, if we learn how to be more present with the truth of our experience. Thanks for being here, and please be kind to yourself.
