DIY Uncrustables

Nut Free DIY Uncrustables Sandwiches – Fun Nut Free Sandwich for School Lunches!

While the store-bought versions aren’t so fuel-filled—usually featuring ultra-processed peanut butter and sugary jelly in a pocket of refined white bread—you can make your own healthier DIY Uncrustables at home!

When I was in school, Uncrustables were ALL the rage. Even though it’s just a simple, crustless PB&J sandwich that’s sealed around the edges…it’s a nice change of pace from the same-old same-old sandwich. And, it’s more fun to eat!

They’re just as easy to make as any old sandwich, convenient to pack in an on-the-go lunch, and this sunbutter banana recipe is totally nut-free! By making your own DIY Uncrustables, YOU are in control of the ingredients. So, you can make more nutritious choices that suit YOUR lifestyle!

Plus, they’re just as enticing and fun to eat as the store-bought pre-packaged kind. And, way cheaper!

Make Healthy Food More FUN

When healthy food is fun, we’re more likely to eat it—especially when it comes to kids. You can keep kids’ healthy school lunches interesting, less messy, and crust-less with DIY Uncrustables!

I’ve switched up the standard recipe by using 100% whole wheat bread, mashed banana, and sunflower seed butter. It’s savory, creamy, and a great option for nut-free sandwich recipes. Then, with just a biscuit/cookie cutter and a fork, you can create the classic Uncrustable shape and pleated edges!

If you or your kids prefer crust-less sandwiches anyway, why not turn them into DIY Uncrustables? And, just like any sandwich, DIY Uncrustables are perfect for meal prep. You could even try a classic nut butter (or seed butter) & jelly combo, package in plastic bags, and FREEZE so you’ve always got freezer sandwiches on hand!

(Freezing these sunbutter banana DIY Uncrustables may or may not work, because the banana could get soggy after freezing and thawing… But I’d give a nut/seed butter and jelly combo a try! Just be sure to spread a layer of nut/seed butter on BOTH bread slices before adding your jelly.)

Crafting DIY Uncrustables to suit YOUR Lifestyle

The pre-made store/bought Uncrustables are definitely convenient—life is busy! But, you can make DIY Uncrustables for very little time, effort, and cost. And, the payoff is HUGE. Not just financially, but also nutritionally!

Instead of refined white bread, you can use a 100% whole grain bread to make your DIY Uncrustables. Or, even a gluten free bread if that’s what suits you and your family’s lifestyle! It’s a simple swap, but whole grain breads still contain the wholesome fiber, vitamins, and minerals in the grain because they’re not so highly refined.

That means more usable fuel for your body, slower-digesting carbs, and a sandwich that can better satisfy hunger at lunchtime! And, with DIY Uncrustables, there’s no worrying about questionable additives, trans fats, and sugars in the PB&J filling.

Have Fun With It!

Choose the fillings that you or your kids will like, and that suit your lifestyle. Nut free, gluten free, low sugar—whatever you prefer! Of course, this sunflower seed butter and mashed banana combo is just ONE option.

Get creative with your favorite spreads and sandwich fillings! There are tons of possibilities you can explore to make these DIY Uncrustables your own. They’re an easy, budget-friendly lunch option for school or work that’s sure to please even the pickiest eaters!
