While traditional croutons can satisfy our cravings for crunch, they’re generally not-so-fuel-filled additions to a salad… Luckily, it’s SO easy to whip up your own, healthier crunchy salad toppings at home. You could choose a more wholesome, whole grain bread to make your own croutons, or use a bread that’s gone stale. Or, try this easy recipe for baked pita crunchy salad toppings to make Mediterranean croutons! No oil needed—just the whole grain or gluten free pita of your choice and an oven.


  • 2 sandwich size pita bread pockets (gluten free if needed)
  • Procedure

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°).
  • Split each pita into 2 rounds and transfer to a baking sheet.
  • Toast in the oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
  • Allow to cool and break into bite-sized pieces.
  • Sprinkle on top of salads and bowls to add a fun crunch!
