Healthy Hot Chocolate Tips & Customizations

Full disclosure: I LOVE a regular cup of hot chocolate. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the full fat, full sugar, totally delicious chocolate drink in its classic form over the holidays!

But, when I’m drinking it more regularly (like, every day…) I’ve got to find ways to lighten things up. That’s why I wanted to craft some healthy hot chocolate options for this holiday season—with a nutritional boost from Four Sigmatic’s superfood mushrooms!

These low calorie, low carb, vegan hot chocolate recipes are all totally adjustable and customizable. Change things up however you like so they can suit YOUR lifestyle and taste buds. Here are some tips and substitution ideas for making healthy hot chocolate at home:

Try Whichever Four Sigmatic Mushroom Mix You’d Like

Four Sigmatic has a HUGE selection of superfood mushroom beverages and supplements that you could use in these homemade hot chocolate recipes. I’ve listed the specific products that I used in each of the recipes below, but don’t feel limited to these options! Change things up however you like.

You can use the Mushroom Hot Cacao Mix with Reishi OR Chaga, the Mushroom Mocha Mix, the Chai Latte Mix, their 10 Mushroom Blend, or even their Superfood Protein Powder. The ‘right’ one to use is whichever YOU are most excited to try, and whichever superfood benefits you’d like to enjoy in sippable form!

Use Any Milk that You Prefer

For all of these healthy hot chocolate recipes, any milk will work! You can use regular dairy milk (skim, low fat, or whole) or whichever nondairy milk that you prefer. Or, you can also use just water if you’d like to lower the calories even further!

Personally, I wanted to make dairy free hot chocolate that’s vegan friendly, so I used almond milk and coconut milk in all of these recipes. And, for the healthiest low calorie hot chocolate drinks, I recommend using a plain, unsweetened milk without any added sugars.

Adjust Sweetness to Taste

I didn’t need to add any sweetener to any of these healthy hot chocolate recipes—I thought they were sweet enough as-is! The Four Sigmatic Mushroom Cacao Mixes are so perfectly flavorful and deliciously spiced, with just a bit of coconut sugar and stevia for sweetness.

But, you’re welcome to add any sweetener that you like to these low calorie hot chocolate recipes as needed. You can stick with regular granulated sugar or coconut sugar, a sticky sweetener like honey or maple syrup, or a natural low carb sweetener like erythritol or monk fruit. You won’t need much, so I recommend starting with less sweetener and tasting as you go!

Low Calorie Hot Chocolate May Vary

I designed all of these low calorie hot chocolate recipes to be around 100 calories each. But, just know that the exact number of calories will vary depending on the specific mushroom mix that you use, as well as the type of milk and/or sweetener.

And, with any homemade hot chocolate you’ve gotta have some tasty TOPPINGS! (Or at least I definitely do!) But again, just know that any optional or additional toppings will alter the nutritional stats for these recipes.
