Equipment

Ingredients

  • 16 oz pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • flour for rolling out dough
  • ¾ cup red sauce of choice
  • 4 mozzarella cheese slices (or provolone)
  • cup whole black olives
  • fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Rest Pizza Dough

  • Let store-bought pizza dough rest at room temperature for 30-60 minutes to rise a bit.
  • (If desired, make homemade pizza sauce now—I used store-bought.)
  • Prep Ghost & Spider Decorations
  • Cut cheese slices into ghost shapes using a paring knife. (I used ~8 ghosts on my pizza.) Set aside.
  • To make spider bodies, slice olives lengthwise—each half is 1 body. For spider legs, slice an olive lengthwise, then cut each half into 4 half-moon slices for 8 legs total. Set aside.
  • Use additional olive pieces to cut eyes & mouths for your ghosts. (Use smaller pieces for eyes, larger/longer pieces for mouths.) Set aside.

Assemble Spooky Pizza

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • On a floured surface, work dough in hands to remove any bubbles. Roll out dough using a rolling pin to ~¼-inch thickness. It helps to lift dough and rotate as you go, holding it on one side and letting gravity help to stretch the dough before you roll again. Form dough into desired shape for your pan.
  • Transfer onto a perforated pizza pan sprayed with cooking spray (or a pizza stone). Spread sauce onto dough (don’t overdo it!), leaving some crust around the edges.
  • Arrange ghost cheese slices on pizza and add olive pieces onto each to create faces.
  • Create spiders on pizza by placing down a sliced olive half for the body, surrounded by 8 half-moon slices as legs.
  • Bake on middle rack of oven for 12-15 minutes, until browned to your liking. (At the end, you can broil for an additional 1-2 minutes if desired.)
  • Rest pizza 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
